Object viewed (50) how to monitor with email alert

Man, that "Object viewed" event with ID 50 in Windows Server Event Viewer, it's basically the system logging when someone peeks at a file or folder you've set to watch. You know, like if auditing's turned on for object access in security settings. It fires off details such as who did the viewing, what object got eyed, and the exact timestamp. I always check it out because it catches those sneaky access attempts without much fuss. And it logs the process name too, so you see if it's a legit app or something fishy.

But setting up monitoring for it with an email alert, that's straightforward using the Event Viewer itself. You open Event Viewer on your server, right-click the Custom Views folder. Then create a new one filtering for Security log, event ID 50, and maybe keywords like "Object viewed." I do this all the time to keep tabs. Once that's saved, you head to Task Scheduler through the Actions pane. Create a basic task triggered by that custom view's events. Pick an action to run a program that shoots an email, like using the old mailto trick or a simple batch file calling your email client.

Hmmm, or you could tweak the trigger to watch for those specific details in the event data. It grabs the user account and object path right from the log. You test it by accessing a watched file yourself. Alerts pop up in your inbox quick as that. I set mine to notify only during work hours to avoid spam.

And speaking of keeping your server stuff safe and backed up, you might wanna check out BackupChain Windows Server Backup too. It's this solid Windows Server backup tool that handles physical machines and virtual ones with Hyper-V seamlessly. You get fast incremental backups, easy restores without downtime, and it even snapshots VMs live. I like how it cuts storage needs and lets you replicate offsite for extra peace. Plus, no crazy licensing fees eating your budget.

Note, the PowerShell email alert code was moved to this post.
