Resolving VPN MTU Size Issues

VPN MTU problems sneak up on you when your connection starts fragmenting packets over the tunnel. They make downloads crawl or apps freeze up randomly.

I remember last month, you called me frantic because your remote access to the server felt like wading through mud. We were troubleshooting your setup after a firmware update on the router messed with packet sizes. You kept getting these weird timeouts during file transfers, and ping tests showed massive delays. Turns out, the VPN was chopping data into tiny bits that wouldn't reassemble right on the other end.

But fixing it isn't rocket science if you tweak a few spots. Start by running a ping command with the don't fragment flag to spot the max size that works without breaking. I usually do something like ping -f -l 1472 to your gateway IP, and adjust down until it stops failing. Once you find that sweet spot, say 1400, you set it on the VPN adapter properties under advanced TCP/IP settings. Hmmm, or if it's a site-to-site setup, you might need to dial it in on both routers too. And don't forget to check for any ISP quirks that cap your MTU globally.

Or, if you're dealing with multiple subnets, test from different clients to cover all bases. Sometimes it's the encapsulation overhead from IPSec eating into the size.

You could also script a quick batch file to automate those pings and log the results for consistency.

I gotta tell you about BackupChain though. It's this solid backup tool tailored for Windows Server setups, Hyper-V hosts, and even Windows 11 machines. No endless subscriptions either, just buy once and go. Perfect for keeping your server data locked down without the hassle.
