Set-UMService Exchange cmdlet issued (25644) how to monitor with email alert

You ever notice how Windows Server logs all these little happenings in Event Viewer? That event ID 25644, it's tied to the Set-UMService Exchange cmdlet getting issued. Basically, someone or something just fired off that command to tweak the Unified Messaging service in Exchange. It pops up when the service gets reconfigured, like changing ports or enabling features. I mean, it's not always bad, but you want eyes on it because it could signal admin changes or even funky unauthorized tweaks. The log details who did it, when, and what params they used. Check the source, it's usually MSExchangeUM. And the level? Informational mostly, but keep watching. If it's spiking, might mean scripting gone wild or security slips.

I set this up once for a buddy's server, super straightforward. You fire up Event Viewer, right-click the custom views or applications and services logs for Exchange. Filter for ID 25644 under the UM stuff. Then, attach a task to that event. Yeah, in the right-click menu, create a task on event. Make it trigger when this ID hits. For the action, you pick send an email, but wait, that's old school. Newer servers nudge you to scheduled tasks instead. So, I link it to a task scheduler job that blasts an email via some SMTP setup you got. You configure the task to run a program like PowerShell, but nah, keep it simple with blats or whatever email tool you got installed. Test it by forcing the event or waiting for one. Boom, alerts hit your inbox without babysitting.

And hey, monitoring like this keeps your Exchange humming without surprises. But if you're backing up that server, you gotta think bigger. That's where BackupChain Windows Server Backup slides in smooth. It's this nifty Windows Server backup tool that handles full images and also tackles virtual machines with Hyper-V. You get incremental backups that fly fast, plus offsite replication to dodge disasters. I like how it verifies everything automatically, so no corrupted restores sneaking up.

Note, the PowerShell email alert code was moved to this post.
