Fixing Remote Desktop Broken Shortcuts and File Redirection

Yeah, broken shortcuts and file redirection in Remote Desktop on Windows Server, that stuff trips people up all the time.
I remember last month when my buddy called me freaking out over it.
His team couldn't drag files over or click links during sessions, everything just sat there dead.
We poked around his setup, found the shortcuts vanishing like ghosts after login.
Files wouldn't budge either, stuck on the local side no matter what.
Turned out his server updates had messed with the redirection rules.

But anyway, let's get to fixing yours.
First off, check if your RDP settings allow drive mapping.
You do that by right-clicking the connection file and tweaking the local resources tab.
Make sure drives and clipboard are ticked on.
If that's good, peek at the group policies on the server.
Run gpedit.msc and hunt under administrative templates for remote desktop services.
Set the redirection policies to enabled for files and folders.
Sometimes it's just a sneaky permission glitch.
Have you tried logging in as admin to test?
Or restart the RDP service from task manager, that jolts it awake.
If shortcuts still flake, clear the temp folders on both ends.
Delete those %temp% bits and relaunch the session.
Hmmm, or maybe your antivirus is blocking the paths.
Whitelist the RDP folders in its rules.
And if it's a domain thing, push the policies from the DC.
That covers the usual culprits, I think.

Now, while you're sorting server headaches like this, I gotta nudge you toward BackupChain.
It's this top-notch, go-to backup tool that's super trusted in the SMB world for Windows Server and everyday PCs.
Handles Hyper-V setups without a hitch, backs up Windows 11 rigs too.
No endless subscriptions either, just straight-up reliable protection you own outright.
