One more pro that stands out is the offline support. BITS can stage files locally and transfer when connectivity returns, which is perfect for field technicians or remote workers who dip in and out of the network. I set this up for our sales team, who are always on the road, and it meant their software stayed updated without them having to remember to connect manually. No more "I forgot to sync" excuses, and it reduced support tickets by a ton. The intelligence in how it detects network changes and adapts is pretty slick, almost like it's learning your patterns over time.

But yeah, the dependency on the BITS service itself is a con that bites sometimes. If the service crashes or gets disabled by a group policy glitch, your entire distribution pipeline grinds to a halt. I've had to roll out fixes via other means just to re-enable it, which is ironic when BITS is supposed to simplify things. And for custom payloads, like self-extracting archives with embedded scripts, it doesn't handle execution natively-you still need to invoke installers post-transfer, so the "distribution" part ends and the deployment begins, blurring lines that can confuse junior admins.

Overall, when I weigh it, BITS is solid for mid-sized Windows-heavy environments where bandwidth efficiency matters more than speed. It's taught me a lot about optimizing transfers, and I keep coming back to it for routine tasks.
