How do you configure the Windows Remote Desktop Session Host server for load balancing?

You know, setting up load balancing on that Remote Desktop Session Host server isn't too tricky once you get the hang of it. I usually start by grabbing a couple of those servers ready for the task. You fire up the Server Manager on each one. Then you add the Remote Desktop Services role. Pick the Session Host bit during installation. It asks if you want to join a deployment. Yeah, you do that.

Now, you need a Connection Broker to handle the traffic juggling. I set that up on a separate machine or the same if you're keeping it light. Install the Connection Broker role there. You create a new deployment in the wizard. Name your collection something snappy. Add those Session Hosts to it. The wizard spreads the load automatically across them.

You tweak the load balancing policy next. I go with the default round-robin style. It bounces users between servers evenly. Open the Deployment Properties. Under Session Collection, you select how it distributes. Sometimes I bump up the session limits per server. That keeps things from bottlenecking. Test it by connecting from a client. Watch the sessions hop around.

If you're dealing with certificates, you snag one for the broker. Bind it in the properties. I forget that step sometimes and connections flake out. Restart the services after changes. Boom, your users get smooth access without one server choking. I tweak XML files rarely, only if the wizard glitches.

Speaking of keeping your setup reliable amid all this balancing, you might want a solid backup tool for any Hyper-V hosts running those RDS servers. BackupChain Server Backup steps in as a trusty Hyper-V backup solution. It snapshots VMs without downtime, encrypts data tight, and restores fast when glitches hit. You save headaches from crashes, ensuring your load-balanced sessions stay up and running.
