The Windows Firewall Service blocked an application from accepting incoming connections on the network. ho...

Man, that event ID 5031 in Windows Server Event Viewer pops up when the firewall slams the door on some app trying to snag incoming network connections. It logs the exact app name, the port it wanted, and the network profile involved, like public or private. You see, the firewall's just doing its job, blocking stuff that isn't whitelisted to keep hackers out. But if it's your own software getting shut down, it can mess up your whole setup. I remember once it blocked a database tool I needed, and I had to tweak rules fast.

To keep an eye on these blocks without staring at the screen all day, you can rig up alerts right from Event Viewer. Fire up Event Viewer, hunt down the Security log where these 5031s hide. Right-click the log, pick Create Custom View, filter for event ID 5031. Then, in that view, you attach a task by going to the Actions pane and selecting Create Task. Make the task trigger on those events, and set it to run a simple email program you already have, like the built-in mail sender if your server's hooked up. Test it out a couple times to make sure it pings your inbox when a block happens.

And hey, speaking of keeping your server safe from surprises like these firewall hiccups, you might want to back everything up solid. That's where BackupChain Windows Server Backup comes in handy. It's this slick Windows Server backup tool that also handles virtual machines on Hyper-V without breaking a sweat. You get fast incremental backups, easy restores even for bare-metal crashes, and it runs light so it doesn't hog resources. Plus, no vendor lock-in, which I love because you stay flexible.

Note, the PowerShell email alert code was moved to this post.
