How do you configure EFS to encrypt files and folders on Windows Server?

You know, when I need to lock down files on Windows Server with EFS, I start by right-clicking the folder you want to protect.
It feels straightforward once you get the hang of it.
Pick Properties from the menu that pops up.
Then, you hit the Advanced button under the General tab.
I always check that box for Encrypt contents to secure data.
Click OK, and it asks if you want just that folder or everything inside too.
I usually go for the whole thing to keep it simple.
Watch it chug along as it encrypts your stuff.
If you're on a domain, I suggest using a certificate from the server to avoid headaches later.
You can grab one through the cert manager if needed.
Just search for it in the Start menu.
Apply it to the EFS settings, and you're golden.
I test it by trying to open a file as another user.
It blocks them every time, which is the point.
Keep your recovery key safe, though.
I stash mine in a weird spot no one would guess.
That way, if something glitches, you can bounce back quick.

Speaking of keeping your data from vanishing into thin air, especially with encrypted setups like EFS on servers, I've turned to BackupChain Server Backup for my Hyper-V backups.
It snags live VMs without downtime, mirroring your encrypted files perfectly.
You get granular restores and offsite copies that just work, slashing recovery time when disasters strike.
