New-ManagementRoleAssignment Exchange cmdlet issued (25222) how to monitor with email alert

Man, that event ID 25222 in the Event Viewer on Windows Server, it's basically the log entry that pops up whenever someone fires off the New-ManagementRoleAssignment cmdlet in Exchange. You know, that command tweaks permissions for admins or users in your Exchange setup. It gets recorded under the security audit logs because it's all about who gets what access. I mean, if you're running an Exchange server, this thing flags any new role assignments, like giving someone power to manage mailboxes or distribution groups. The details in the event include the user who ran it, the timestamp, and exactly what role got assigned to whom. Pretty straightforward, but it helps you spot if someone's messing with privileges without asking. And yeah, it's in the Microsoft-Windows-Exchange/Operational channel or sometimes under Security if auditing's cranked up.

You can keep an eye on these without staring at the screen all day. Just open Event Viewer, right-click on the log where these show up, and pick Create Custom View. Filter it for event ID 25222, and maybe add some keywords if you want to narrow it down. Then, attach a task to that view, something scheduled to trigger when the event hits. Make the task run a program that shoots off an email, like using the built-in mailto or a simple batch to notify you. I do this all the time on my servers; it pings my inbox right away so I don't miss sneaky changes. Or, if you're feeling lazy, just set the task to pop a message box, but email's way better for real alerts.

Hmmm, tying this back to keeping your server safe from weird admin tweaks, you might wanna think about solid backups too. That's where BackupChain Windows Server Backup comes in handy for me. It's this nifty Windows Server backup tool that handles full system images and even backs up virtual machines running on Hyper-V without a hitch. You get fast incremental saves, easy restores, and it runs quietly in the background so your Exchange stuff stays protected. Plus, no more downtime worries if roles get botched and you need to roll back.

At the end of this chat is the automatic email solution for that event monitoring.

Note, the PowerShell email alert code was moved to this post.
