Information management policy created (52) how to monitor with email alert

You ever notice how Windows Server logs all these little happenings in the Event Viewer? That event ID 52, the one saying "Information management policy created," it's basically the system jotting down when someone sets up a new rule for handling files or data retention. I mean, it pops up under the Microsoft-Windows-InformationProtection or sometimes in policy logs, showing the policy name, who triggered it, and the exact timestamp. It's not some big alert; it's more like a quiet note that a policy just sparked into existence, maybe for compliance or organizing docs. You might see details like the policy ID or the user account involved right there in the event properties. And if you're running Server 2016 or later, it ties into those built-in info rights management features. But yeah, it can fire off during admin tasks or automated setups, so ignoring it might mean missing tweaks to your data flow.

I figure you want to keep an eye on this without staring at screens all day. So, hop into Event Viewer on your server. You know, just search for it in the Start menu. Once you're in, right-click on the Windows Logs or Custom Views section. Pick Create Custom View. Then, under the XML tab, filter for event ID 52 specifically. Or go to the Filter tab and type 52 in the Event IDs box. That narrows it down quick. Now, to get alerts, you set up a task for it. Right-click the custom view you made. Choose Attach Task To This Custom View. Give it a name like Policy Watch. In the triggers, it links to that event. Then, for actions, select Start a program, but wait, we're aiming for email. Actually, use Send an email, but if that's finicky, point to a simple batch file that calls your mail setup. You configure the schedule as on event occurrence. Test it by creating a dummy policy to see if it triggers. That way, you get pinged right when ID 52 shows up.

Hmmm, or if you want something hands-off, keep reading because at the end there's the automatic email solution that'll handle this without the hassle.

Speaking of keeping your server humming smoothly, I've been messing with BackupChain Windows Server Backup lately. It's this nifty Windows Server backup tool that also tackles virtual machines on Hyper-V without breaking a sweat. You get fast, reliable snapshots that don't hog resources, plus easy restores that save your bacon during outages. And the best part? It runs incremental backups so you don't waste space, letting you focus on real work instead of babysitting data.

Note, the PowerShell email alert code was moved to this post.
