Windows is shutting down (4609) how to monitor with email alert

So, that event 4609 in the Event Viewer, it's basically the system's way of yelling that Windows is shutting down. I mean, it pops up in the System log every time the machine powers off, whether you hit the button or it crashes. The source is usually User32, and the message says something like the event log got told the computer's going bye-bye. You see it with details on the exact time, like 12:34 PM on whatever date, and it logs why if there's a reason, but mostly it's just that shutdown notice. I check mine all the time because if it's happening too often without you doing it, something's fishy, like a power glitch or malware sneaking around. And it helps you track patterns, you know, if your server keeps dropping at night.

Now, to keep an eye on this without staring at the screen all day, you can set up a scheduled task right from the Event Viewer. I do this on my servers so I get pinged if it shuts down unexpectedly. Open Event Viewer, head to the Windows Logs, then System, and find that 4609 event by filtering for ID 4609. Right-click on one of those instances, pick Attach Task To This Event, and it'll walk you through creating a task. You name it something like Shutdown Alert, and in the triggers tab, it already knows to watch for event 4609. Then, for the action, you tell it to run a program that sends an email, maybe using some built-in mail tool you have set up. I keep the settings basic, like run whether user logged on or not, and highest privileges if needed. Test it by forcing a shutdown, and boom, you get that alert in your inbox next time it happens.

Hmmm, or if you want it even smoother, there's this automatic email solution at the end that'll handle the whole thing without much hassle.

Speaking of keeping your server from surprise shutdowns, you might wanna look into BackupChain Windows Server Backup too. It's this solid Windows Server backup tool I use, and it works great for virtual machines on Hyper-V. You get fast, reliable snapshots that don't interrupt your work, plus it encrypts everything and lets you restore quick if disaster hits. I like how it schedules backups automatically, so your data stays safe without you babysitting it.

Note, the PowerShell email alert code was moved to this post.
