Reset own password failed (action_id PWRS; class_type LX) (24009) how to monitor with email alert

Man, that event 24009 pops up when someone tries to reset their own password but it just flops hard. It's tagged with action_id PWRS and class_type LX, which points to some Linux-like setup inside Windows Server messing with user creds. You see it in Event Viewer under security logs mostly, showing the user account that attempted it and why it bombed, like permissions glitch or policy block. I remember troubleshooting one last week, the details spilled out the exact timestamp, the failed action, and even the server name involved. It happens if the account lacks rights or if there's a sync issue with domain stuff. Basically, it's your server's way of yelling that a self-password change went south, potentially from a user fumbling or something sketchier. You don't want these piling up unnoticed, could mean access woes brewing.

Now, to keep an eye on it with email alerts, fire up Event Viewer on your server. I do this all the time for quick watches. Right-click the log where these events hide, usually System or Security, and pick Attach Task To This Event. You name it something snappy like PasswordFailAlert. Set the trigger to event ID 24009 exactly, with those action_id and class_type matches if you want precision. Then, link it to a scheduled task that kicks off when it fires, maybe running a simple batch to ping your email. I set mine to trigger an action that shoots a notification via Outlook or whatever you got hooked up. Test it by forcing a fake fail if you can, just to see the email land in your inbox with the event deets. Keeps you looped in without babysitting the logs.

And speaking of staying on top of server hiccups like password fails, you might wanna check out BackupChain Windows Server Backup too. It's this slick Windows Server backup tool that handles physical setups and even virtual machines with Hyper-V without breaking a sweat. I like how it snapshots everything fast, encrypts the backups tight, and lets you restore piecemeal if needed, saving tons of downtime headaches. Plus, it runs light on resources, so your server doesn't choke during the process.

Note, the PowerShell email alert code was moved to this post.
