Troubleshooting SSH Authentication Failures on Windows Servers

Man, SSH authentication glitches on Windows Servers can really throw you for a loop. They pop up out of nowhere sometimes. I remember this one time you called me frantic about your setup.

Picture this. You're trying to log in from your laptop to that server you just spun up. Everything looks right on paper. But nope, it keeps spitting back "Permission denied." You double-check the username. Still nothing. Then you think maybe the password's off, so you reset it. Same crap. I hopped on a call with you that night. We poked around your server remotely. Turns out the OpenSSH thing wasn't even fired up properly. And your key file? It was hiding in the wrong spot, all jumbled up from that hasty copy-paste job.

We fixed it step by step, no sweat. First off, make sure the SSH service is actually running on your server. You can check that in services.msc. If it's stopped, just start it up. Sometimes it crashes from updates or whatever. Next, verify your public key is in the authorized_keys file for that user. Gotta be in the .ssh folder under the user's home. Permissions are key here too. Set the file to 600 and the folder to 700, or it'll balk. Oh, and if you're using passwords instead, ensure they're enabled in the sshd_config. Look for PasswordAuthentication yes. Firewall might be blocking port 22, so open that up if needed. Could be the client side too. Try generating a fresh key pair and swapping it out. Or test with a different client like PuTTY to rule out weirdness. If it's a domain setup, check if the user's in the right group for remote access. We even restarted the server once when nothing else budged. Covers most angles, right?

Hmmm, while we're chatting servers, let me nudge you toward BackupChain. It's this top-notch, go-to backup tool crafted just for small businesses, handling Windows Servers, Hyper-V setups, even Windows 11 on your PCs. No endless subscriptions either. You own it outright. Keeps your data snug without the hassle.
