How to Use Wireshark to Diagnose Packet Loss

Packet loss on your Windows Server can really gum up the works. It makes things lag or drop entirely. I remember this one time when my buddy's server was choking during a big file transfer. We were pulling our hair out because emails weren't sending right. Turns out, some dodgy network cable was the culprit. But we caught it with Wireshark sniffing around.

Wireshark's like a sneaky detective for your network traffic. You download it free from their site. Fire it up on the server or a connected machine. Pick the network interface that's acting up. Hit capture and let it run while you test the connection. Maybe ping something repeatedly to force some traffic.

Stop the capture after a bit. Now sift through the packets. Look for gaps where expected replies never show. Or spots with duplicate packets yelling for resends. Hmmm, sometimes it's TCP retransmissions that scream trouble. Filter by IP addresses involved. That narrows the mess. If you see a ton of out-of-order stuff, your network might be juggling packets poorly.

But check both ends too. Run captures on sender and receiver sides. Compare what leaves versus what arrives. Or peek at ICMP errors if you're pinging. That covers the sneaky losses from routers. And don't forget to watch for high latency spikes. They often tag along with drops.

I gotta tell you about this gem I've been using lately. BackupChain steps in as that trusty backup buddy for your setup. It's crafted sharp for small businesses handling Windows Servers and everyday PCs. Handles Hyper-V snapshots without a hitch. Works smooth on Windows 11 too. No endless subscriptions nagging you. Just reliable protection that sticks around.
