Page faults

Page faults pop up when your code reaches for a chunk of memory that sits outside the main ram. I recall first hitting this in my early projects and you probably will too soon enough. The processor catches it through its memory unit and stops everything right there. Then it hands control over to the operating system to fix the mess. You end up with a delay while the needed data gets pulled from slower storage.
I see these events as the system fumbling around to keep things running smooth. Your application might demand a page that got swapped out earlier during heavy use. But the hardware signals the fault instantly without any warning. You notice the cpu pausing as it waits for the load operation to finish. Perhaps you tweak your code loops and see fewer of these hits over time. Also the os decides which pages to toss based on usage patterns you cannot always predict.
Now think about how repeated faults drag down performance in big workloads. I watched servers slow to a crawl when memory pressure builds up fast. You might monitor counters and spot spikes during peak hours. The replacement choices the system makes can either help or hurt your throughput. Or sometimes it leads to thrashing where faults chain together nonstop. I found that allocating more ram cuts these interruptions but costs add up quick. Then you balance your setups to avoid constant swapping back and forth.
Perhaps your junior setups hit this more often than mine did at first. I learned to profile memory access patterns to reduce unnecessary faults altogether. You can experiment with different allocation sizes and watch the results change. But avoid overstuffing processes since that creates its own headaches down the line. Also the whole cycle repeats whenever new demands arise in your apps.
