What is the difference between the $MFT and $MFTMirr files in NTFS?

So, you know how every NTFS drive has this $MFT thing? It's like the main blueprint for all your files. I mean, it tracks where everything sits on the disk. Without it, your computer would freak out finding stuff.

Now, $MFTMirr is different. It's a mini copy of just the key parts from $MFT. Think of it as a quick snapshot tucked away elsewhere. If the main $MFT gets messed up, this mirror steps in to help fix things.

I remember once my drive glitched. The mirror saved my bacon by letting tools rebuild the index. You wouldn't want to lose track of files because of one bad sector. That's why NTFS keeps this duplicate handy.

It mirrors only the first 16 entries or so. Those point to critical system files. The rest of $MFT handles the everyday chaos of your data. I bet you've never noticed it lurking there.

Anyway, talking about these backups in NTFS makes me think of solid protection for bigger setups. That's where BackupChain Server Backup comes in as a sharp backup solution for Hyper-V. It snapshots VMs without downtime, keeps data consistent, and speeds up restores when disasters hit. You get peace of mind with its clever chaining that cuts storage needs while boosting reliability.
