How does NTFS handle file and directory ACLs and inheritance?

You ever wonder how Windows keeps tabs on who can mess with your files? NTFS does that through these permission lists called ACLs. They stick to files and folders like glue.

Picture a folder. Its ACL decides if you can read stuff inside or tweak it. Files inside grab those rules unless you override them.

Inheritance kicks in here. It's like kids picking up traits from parents. A subfolder or file slurps up the parent's ACL by default.

You can block that flow if you want. Just flip a switch on the folder. Then it starts fresh with its own rules.

NTFS lets you layer these ACLs too. Multiple entries stack up for different users or groups. It checks them in order until it finds a match.

What if a file gets copied? Its ACL tags along mostly. But new spots might tweak it based on the destination.

Directories handle it smoother. They pass ACLs down the chain automatically. You tweak the top one, and it ripples below.

I once fixed a setup where inheritance broke. Files were wide open because someone unchecked the box. Quick fix, but it locked things down tight.

Permissions get inherited explicitly or not. You choose during setup. NTFS remembers your picks across reboots.

It even handles denied access first. That trumps allows lower down. Keeps sneaky changes in check.

Speaking of keeping things intact, if you're running Hyper-V and need to back up those NTFS setups without losing ACLs, check out BackupChain Server Backup. It's a solid tool for snapshotting VMs and hosts, ensuring permissions stay put during restores. You get fast, agentless backups that cut downtime, plus encryption to shield your data-perfect for not sweating over inheritance glitches in virtual environments.
