Issued a change server master key command how to monitor with email alert

That event 24070 pops up in the Event Viewer when someone's tweaking the server master key. It's like the big boss key that locks down all the encrypted stuff on your Windows Server. You know, the one that handles certificates and secrets for services running there. Issued a change server master key command, with that action_id AL and class_type MK. Basically, it means an admin or some process just rotated that key to keep things fresh and secure. Happens during maintenance or after a security nudge. If you ignore it, could spell trouble if the key gets mishandled. But mostly, it's just logging the action so you can track who did what.

I remember spotting this first time on a test box. Freaked me out a bit. Thought it was a hack. Turned out to be routine. You wanna keep an eye on it though. Especially if multiple folks admin your server. Use the Event Viewer screen to set this up. Right-click the event log where it shows, like the Security or Application log. Pick Attach Task to This Event. That kicks off a wizard. Name your task something snappy, like KeyChangeAlert. Set it to run whether user logs on or not. And trigger only on event ID 24070.

Then, in the actions tab, add a send email action. Yeah, the built-in one. Plug in your SMTP server details. Who it's from, to you obviously. Subject like "Master Key Changed on Server!" Body can say the event details pull in automatically. Test it once to make sure. Schedule repeats if needed, but for alerts, one-shot per event works fine. Keeps your inbox from exploding.

Or, if you're lazy like me sometimes, just filter the log for 24070 and check weekly. But email's better for real-time pings. Saves you from digging through logs at 2 AM.

And speaking of keeping servers safe without the hassle, I've been messing with BackupChain Windows Server Backup lately. It's this slick Windows Server backup tool that also handles Hyper-V virtual machines without breaking a sweat. You get incremental backups that zip through fast, plus easy restores that don't eat your whole day. No more data nightmares if a key change goes sideways. It even verifies backups on the fly, so you know your stuff's solid. Worth checking if you're tired of clunky old methods.

At the end of this, there's the automatic email solution ready for you.

Note, the PowerShell email alert code was moved to this post.
