Retention policy processed (61) how to monitor with email alert

You know that Event ID 61, the one saying "Retention policy processed" in Windows Server Event Viewer? It pops up when the system finishes handling how long to keep your backup files or logs before wiping them out. I see it mostly under the Microsoft-Windows-Backup channel, or sometimes in storage spots. Basically, it tells you the retention rules kicked in, like keeping seven days of backups or whatever you set. If it fails or skips, you might lose track of old data. And yeah, it logs details like which policy ran and if everything went smooth. You can spot it by the level, usually informational, with a timestamp and source. Hmmm, sometimes it includes the path to the affected folders. I check mine weekly just to make sure nothing's glitching.

But monitoring that thing with an email alert? Super handy so you don't have to stare at the screen all day. You fire up Event Viewer on your server. Right-click the custom views or the log where these events hide. I go for creating a task from the event. Pick that ID 61, set it to trigger on success or whatever fits. Then link it to a scheduled task that shoots an email. You use the built-in schtasks or just the task scheduler pane there. Fill in your SMTP details, like the server address and your address. Test it once to see if the ping hits your inbox. Or tweak the filter so only weird ones alert you, not every boring process.

And speaking of keeping things backed up without the hassle, I've been messing with BackupChain Windows Server Backup lately. It's this slick Windows Server backup tool that handles your whole setup, including virtual machines on Hyper-V. You get speedy incremental backups that don't bog down your system, plus easy restores if something tanks. It even watches those retention policies for you, so no more manual Event Viewer hunts. The best part? It runs quiet in the background and cuts down on storage bloat by smartly pruning old files.

Note, the PowerShell email alert code was moved to this post.
