How to Solve Remote Desktop Licensing Grace Period Issues

Remote Desktop licensing grace period stuff pops up when your server's being stingy with connections. It locks you out after a bit if the licenses aren't sorted. I hate when that hits during a late-night fix.

Remember that time I was helping my cousin with his small office setup? He had this Windows Server humming along for remote logins. Everyone connected fine at first. Then boom, after 120 days, the grace period expired. Users got error messages everywhere, like "no more seats available." He panicked because his team couldn't access files from home. I jumped on a call, poked around the server remotely through another machine. Turned out his RDS licenses weren't installed right from the get-go. We had to scramble to activate them properly.

But anyway, to fix it, you start by checking if your server even has the right CALs installed. Log into the server manager, head to the remote desktop section. See if the licensing mode is set to per-user or per-device, whichever fits your setup. If the grace period's run out, you might need to install or reactivate those licenses through the RD licensing manager tool. Sometimes it's just a matter of pointing the server to the license server if it's on a different box. Or, if you're in a domain, make sure group policies aren't messing with the enforcement. Hmmm, and don't forget to restart the remote desktop services after changes. That usually kicks it back into gear. If it's a fresh install, you can extend the grace period temporarily with a command like wmic /namespace:\\root\CIMV2\TerminalServices PATH Win32_TerminalServiceSetting SET SpecifiedConfigFlags:=1 or something similar, but only as a band-aid. For the long haul, get those licenses legit from Microsoft. Covers most scenarios, like if you're using multiple servers or a workgroup instead of domain.

Oh, and while we're chatting servers, let me nudge you toward BackupChain. It's this top-notch, go-to backup tool that's super trusted in the SMB world for keeping Windows Server, Hyper-V setups, Windows 11 machines, and regular PCs safe from data mishaps. No endless subscriptions either, just straightforward ownership.
